Choose a Cause!

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  I am a strong advocate for this cause because, this year, I celebrate my 10th anniversary as a breast cancer survivor.  As I’m grateful to be here to share this milestone with you I realize many are not.  I also acknowledge that many women (and men) and not here as a result of another cause recognized this month, National Domestic Violence Awareness month.  I was going to advocate for both (and I still will) but before I did, I decided to research all issues/causes this month to give them a shout out as well.  What I discovered is, there is a lot, and I mean a lot, in October alone; issues including health, wellness, education, autism, pets, diversity, religious, finance…the list goes on.  All very important issues that, when one starts peeling back the layers of our lives and those of our family and friends, these causes could easily be intersectional.

Looking at the list and seeing many issues I have a heart for I realized I/we cannot be all things to all causes, which make me a little forlorn.   We tend to strongly support causes we have personal attachments to, and that’s okay.  My point is to encourage everyone to pick a cause and advocate for it.  Share information about it including your story connection.  We never know who is watching and who will be educated and inspired by what you speak up for or against.

That’s it…that’s the message for today.

P.S.  Remember to schedule your breast exams (including self) and mammograms – it’s your best bet for early detection.  Remind a parent or friend.
